How to Use an IV Pole
- First, ensure that the IV pole is stable and secure. Check the base of the pole and ensure that it is resting on a flat surface.
- If the IV pole is adjustable, adjust the height of the pole to the appropriate level. The IV bag should be at a comfortable height for the patient, and the tubing should be free from any kinks or twists.
- Hang the IV bag on the hook provided on the pole. Make sure that the bag is properly secured and balanced.
- Open the roller clamp on the IV tubing to allow fluid to flow through the tubing. If you're not sure where the roller clamp is, ask a nurse or healthcare provider for assistance.
- Check the drip rate on the IV bag to ensure that it is flowing at the prescribed rate. The drip rate should be adjusted according to the healthcare provider's instructions.
- If you need to move the IV pole, grip the pole at a comfortable height and push it forward or pull it backward as needed. Be careful not to bump the pole into anything or anyone.
- If the IV bag needs to be changed, remove the empty bag and replace it with a new one. Make sure that the new bag is properly secured and that the tubing is free from any air bubbles.
- When you're finished using the IV pole, turn off the roller clamp to stop the flow of fluid. Remove the IV bag from the pole and dispose of it properly. Clean the pole with a disinfectant wipe or spray, and store it in a safe place until it is needed again.
